Lord of the Dance: 30th Anniversary at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre

Vicky BeuttlerSeptember 17, 2026

For 30 years, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance has dazzled audiences around the world with its unique combination of high-energy Irish dancing, original music, storytelling, and sensuality, and this week it is at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. This beloved Irish dance show transcends culture and language, soaring into the soul on astounding aerial moves, unparalleled precision dancing and state-of-the art theatrical effects.

The journey to Lord of the Dance began with Michael Flatley’s dream to create the greatest Irish dance show in the world. In 1994, he changed the face of Irish dance forever with his creation of Riverdance and 2 years later, Lord of the Dance officially debuted on July 2, 1996, at The Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. From Dublin, the show went on to a run of four sold-out weeks at the London Coliseum, sold-out within days of going on sale in Australia, and broke all known box office records in South Africa. America fell under its spell in March 1997, with thirteen consecutive sell-out shows at New York’s prestigious Radio City Music Hall. In 1998, Lord of the Dance set a record-breaking run of 21 consecutive shows at London’s legendary Wembley Arena; it is a record that still stands to this day. Since its premiere, Lord of the Dance has sold out over 1000 theatres, arenas and stadiums worldwide and been seen by over 60 million people in 60 different countries on every continent, making it one of the most successful dance productions in the world.

The Lord of the Dance narrative emerges from the dreams of the character of the Little Spirit. It is a classic tale of good versus evil; in her dream the Lord of the Dance represents all things good in the world but he must fight against evil in the form of The Dark Lord and his army of Warlords. Will the Lord of the Dance and his men defeat the Dark Lord? Will the Spirit’s Dream become a nightmare from which she cannot wake? Let the dance embrace you and take you on a journey filled with energy and passion.

I was in my early teens when Lord of the Dance first came to the stage and, although I have never seen the show on stage before, even then I was aware of the buzz that was going up around the show and it’s style and saw some of the jaw dropping performances on TV. 30 years later, I have a young daughter who is studying Irish dancing and I was thrilled to be able to share the experience of seeing this legendary show with her. As a young person with no need to filter her views, she was my litmus test for how good the show really was and my heart is warmed to say that she absolutely loved it. We both found it exciting, dynamic, intimidating in places and ultimately breathtaking. The speed, passion and precision of the footwork was unlike anything I have ever seen. I can only describe it as perfectly synchronised, syncopated joy.

Since its inception, Lord of the Dancehas transformed Irish dance into a global cultural phenomenon, setting new standards for creativity and theatrical productions. Michael Flatley’s visionary show has been celebrated as a “showpiece extravaganza” and continues to awe audiences worldwide with its captivating blend of dance, music, and storytelling. The 30th Anniversary Tour features brand-new choreography, state-of-the-art special effects, and cutting-edge lighting, ensuring that the production continues to push boundaries and deliver an unforgettable experience. Updated costumes also add a glamourous, yet contemporary flare to the new look.

Hailed for its dazzling combination of precision dance, powerful music, pyrotechnics, and emotional storytelling, Lord of the Dance is a true marvel of the theatrical world. The show features over 150,000 taps per performance, with the dancers’ energy and passion promising an electrifying experience.

Once you experience Lord of the Dance, you will never settle for anything less in Irish dancing; it will leave you exhausted, elated and exhilarated in equal measure.

Lord of the Dance will continue to run at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre from Monday 14th September – Sunday 20th September 2026 before continuing to tour the UK as follows:
