Sunset Song at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh

This latest adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon's classic Scottish novel is…extraordinary!

In just a few sentences I learned more about the First World War than I ever have but, more importantly, I really felt what it must have been like to live in a close, rural community at the beginning of the 20th century, and to eventually lose your loved ones to war….and all this in Doric, the Scots language I often didn't understand.

Some people might be put off by the fact that they find the dialogue difficult to decipher, but Scotland has such a strong identity, and it's proud of it, so why shouldn't Scots actors perform in their own tongue? Besides, I quickly became attuned to its poetic and rhythmic qualities. But what makes this accessible to all is Finn den Hertog's compassionate direction of a sterling company of actors whose moving and expressive performances bring the production to life.

It's the story of Chris, growing up in a rural community in a dysfunctional family, and her battle to belong. Does she remain on the farm and be forever seen as a country bumpkin or further her education and become a teacher, fearing she'll be mocked for her country ways. It's a dilemma many people in society face today – how to fit in, and Morna Young's adaptation really tugs at your heartstrings, invoking love, anger, frustration, fear and friendship. And not a lot of joy, I'm afraid.

The committed cast is strongly led by Danielle Jam as a feisty but vulnerable Chris, Ali Craig as her cruel father, Rori Hawthorn as her troubled mother and Naomi Stirrat as her strident brother Will.

Being a Scottish production, this show's audiences are also treated to Finn Anderson's earthy music and haunting ballads beautifully sung against Emma Bailey's pared back set and Emma Jones' striking lighting.
