The One Where They Sing! FRIENDS! The Musical Parody

The One Where They Sing! FRIENDS! The Musical Parody, the hit New York and Las Vegas sensation, is a side-splitting musical comedy packed with iconic moments from all ten seasons of the beloved television series and this week it’s at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. We join Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe as they navigate love, friendship, and life’s ups and downs in 1990’s New York City. Featuring an entirely original musical score, the show follows the escapades of the world’s most famous group of twenty-somethings, hitting all the series’ major plot points, from the Ross and Rachel saga to Phoebe’s pregnancy, special guest appearances and beyond. From the Producers of Hairspray and the Director of The Full Monty, this humorous take on the beloved TV show blends iconic moments with laugh out loud comedy and it’s off-kilter pop-rock score stands out thanks to such immortal hits like The Only Coffee Shop In New York, 45 Grove Street – How Can We Afford This Place? and We Were On A Break.

Being a teenager in the 90s, watching FRIENDS was an almost daily occurrence for me growing up and also as a huge musical theatre fan, this show hit all the right notes for me. It was obvious that the original music was composed by a Musical Theatre fan as there were barely veiled references to songs from other West End, pop and film hits. These included parodies of Seasons of Love from RENT, Cell Block Tango from Chicago, Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof, My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It) by En Vogue and Gunther’s heartfelt and hilarious parody rendition of Part of Your World from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

The show’s creators’ love for the original TV show material and characters was evident in their immense attention to detail. They knew they were making something for the fans and there were little easter eggs and inside jokes everywhere in the set, highly accurate costumes and weird and wacky props. There was a good helping of 90s nostalgia and iconic moments including appearances from The Big White Dog from Joey and Chaundler’s apartment, Hugsey the Penguin and even talking and singing puppet versions of the Chick and the Duck!

We mustn’t of course forget to mention the amazing cast themselves, whose energy and attention to detail on both their physical and vocal characterisations of the original FRIENDS characters was a tour de force. For me, the star of the show had to be Daniel Parkinson who took on the foppish, heart-warming physically expressive role of Chandler Bing as well as that of his iconic on-off girlfriend Janice. OH. MY. GOD!

I was also pleasantly surprised at the extremely high quality of the singing; before seeing the show I thought that the vocals might take a back seat to the acting, but I was happily proved wrong with exceptional vocals and slick harmonies across the board. By the end of the show, I was singing and clapping along with ‘my FRIENDS’ as the show came to a close with an iconic umbrella dance in the fountain.

This show comes highly recommended for any FRIENDS fan . Whether you’re in a love triangle, trying to make it as an actor, or just can’t quit your day job, you’ll be laughing, crying, and quoting your favourite lines all night long! Warning: May cause spontaneous PIVOT-ing! Get ready for non-stop laughs with your favourite Friends.
