An evening without Kate Bush

An evening without Kate Bush, by Sarah Louise young and russell Lucas at Underbelly theatre, Soho
I originally saw this show about 5 years ago at Soho theatre, it was in the aftermath of covid, theatres and venues were just about back to normal service, everyone was very much in need of a bit of light entertainment and ‘An evening without Kate Bush’ very much delivered. So when I saw that Sarah Louise young was once again touring her fabulously quirky Kate Bush tribute show, I jumped at the chance to see it again and see how it had evolved.
In its original incarnation ‘An evening without Kate Bush’ was a short one act cabaret: A mix of comedy and music with a small amount of audience participation. But I can tell you it has now morphed into a show of two halves: The first involves comedy, mild language, suggestive dancing and a lot of audience participation. (you have been warned!)
The second half is more of a tribute act in the traditional sense: Less dialogue and more performance based. Sarah-Louise young takes us through a selection of Kate Bush’s best-known hits (Plus a strange little interpretive dance skit about breaking into Kate Bush’s house – As you do!) Watching her you get the feeling that singing and dancing is where her heart really lies, and that she is trying to push this aspect of the show more, and good luck to her because I must say when it comes to her idol she has really put her 1000 hours in. She can absolutely sing like Kate Bush, and she has also nailed the choreography – Which she even takes the trouble of breaking down for us in one hilarious scene in which we are guided through the lexicon of Kate Bush dance moves. (Everything from Champagne whipcrack to the shifty cat explained!) What can I say, you really have to be there.
Speaking of which ‘An evening without Kate Bush’ is on at Underbelly soho until April 26th before moving to Brighton in May. If you have even a passing fondness for Kate Bush go and check it out, you won’t regret it.
