EDINBURGH FRINGE: Gyles Brandreth Up Memory Lane! at the Assembly George Square (Gordon Aikman Theatre)***** (1 hr)

Gyles Brandreth is in the pink – literally!
He is dressed in pink trousers and trainers atopped by one of his famous (this time, pink) jumpers bearing his name…as if you didn’t know who he was. Because this man is one of the country’s most prolific public figures and is superb at everything he does.
Despite his opening remarks about old age and telling the older members of his audience to feel free to sleep (as if that is ever going to happen), he really is in the pink, bursting onto the stage with his usual enthusiasm and quick repartee. Then he’s into the show. It’s about memory and no-one has as rich a repertoire with his inexhaustible dropping of famous names, from Queen Elizabeth II to Lord Olivier. Some you’ll have heard before, others you won’t have, but all his stories are delivered in the most entertaining way.
This time, however, there’s something different. Brandreth now has a podcast called Rosebed and so far he has interviewed around 300 guests, from West End and Broadway stars to dames and prime ministers, about their earliest memories. And joining him onstage in Edinburgh is the series’ producer Harriet Jaine, making her performing debut.
The rapport between them is palpable. Although not strictly a performer she’s up for anything, including sweetly singing, and gives Brandreth as good as she gets, but in the most charming, unspoilt way.
There is also a little audience participation, during which Brandreth asks us to shout out against his pet hate – the slogan on trains, See It, Say It, Sort It.
Well, I’m going to turn this into a positive for him – you should see the show, say how much you enjoyed it and then both you and he will be sorted!
EDINBURGH FRINGE: Gyles Brandreth Up Memory Lane! is at the Assembly George Square (Gordon Aikman Theatre) until Aug 30 at 4pm
