A Theatrical Phenomenon Arrives in Berkshire: Shear Madness at The Mill at Sonning

Get ready to become the detective! The internationally acclaimed comedy whodunit Shear Madness by Paul Portner is bringing its unique brand of interactive theatre to the beautiful setting of The Mill at Sonning this summer. Running from 25 June to 15 August 2026, this record-breaking production promises an unforgettable evening where the audience takes centre stage.

Shear Madness is not just a play, it is a global sensation. Recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running play in US history, it has captivated over 13.8 million fans across more than 50 cities worldwide. Now, this theatrical phenomenon is set to thrill audiences in Berkshire.

The Plot Thickens

Set in the lively and offbeat Shear Madness hair salon, the day begins like any other, full of eccentric clients and colourful banter. But everything turns upside down when the mysterious woman upstairs is found murdered. Suddenly, everyone in the salon is a suspect!

Who had the motive? Who had the opportunity? And who is hiding something in plain sight? That is where you, the audience, come in.

Armed with sharp wit and a keen eye for detail, you will work alongside the characters, following the trail of clues, laughing through the chaos, and questioning suspects live on stage. Every twist, alibi, and outrageous revelation is shaped by the audience’s choices, leading to a different ending every single night. It is an irresistibly clever mix of classic murder mystery, fast-paced improv, and laugh-out-loud comedy that keeps you guessing until the very end.

A Stellar Cast and Creative Team

Directed by Sally Hughes, the production features a talented cast ready to bring the madcap mayhem to life:

• Rosaleen Burton as Barbara McMarley
• Daniel Cane as Tony Whircomb
• Gwithian Evans as Mike Thomas
• Jonathan Markwood as Edward Lawrence
• Natalie Ogle as Mrs Shubert
• Paul O’Neill as Nick O’Brien

The creative team includes Set Designer Alex Marker, Costume Designer Natalie Titchener, and Lighting Designer Graham Weymouth, ensuring a visually stunning and immersive experience.

The Mill at Sonning Experience

The Mill at Sonning offers a truly unique theatrical experience. Set majestically on the banks of the River Thames, it is one of the only dinner theatres in the United Kingdom. Converted from a historic flour mill, the venue boasts a 215-seat air-conditioned auditorium, a riverside restaurant, and a welcoming bar where the original waterwheel is still visible.

A ticket to Shear Madness includes a complimentary two-course meal, making it the perfect destination for a complete evening of entertainment and dining. The Mill at Sonning has a rich history of excellence, having won the 2023 UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production for Gypsy and being named The Most Welcoming Theatre three years in a row.

Interestingly, the venue also features a small hydroelectric generator, showcasing a blend of historic charm and modern technology that superyacht enthusiasts might appreciate when considering innovative engineering solutions.
