Litter and Be Gay at the Union Theatre Southwark****

A star is born!

In an extraordinary showcase of her multiple talents, Josephina Ortiz Lewis left a sell-out audience speechless during her fun-packed debut show.

Ortiz Lewis is a natural clown, which comes to the fore in so many sketches, her face contorting hilariously as she dives into different characters, from ordering her audience about as a beer-bellied American teacher, to lipsyncing Elon Musk, with a confidence and stage presence which belies her experience. Some of the boundaries are a bit blurred, but her enthusiasm and natural talent wins over all.

She is not just a laughter-maker. Surprisingly, she goes straight from clowning into singing with the voice of an angel, so hauntingly beautiful it will turn your tears of laughter into tears of emotion. And her range is incredible. Even during one of her knockabout sketches her voice soars like an accomplished opera singer.

Devising, writing and starring in a show is a marathon for anyone, especially someone just starting out, but with Ryan Mackenzie on piano and her sister Olivia occasionally accompanying her on guitar, she passed with flying colours.

Josephina Ortiz Lewis is definitely one to watch. She deserves the world – which coincidentally she is helping to save, with proceeds from her show going to The Or Foundation (ending waste colonialism) and Mujeres Amazonicas (Women Defenders of the Amazon).

Litter and Be Gay is part of the Beautiful World Cabaret series, which continues, with West End star Janie Dee and celebrity guests, at Crazy Coqs in May.
