This collaborative production from New Wolsey Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Theatre by the Lake and Octagon Theatre Bolton brings Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls the Musical to life as a warm, sharply observed and deeply affecting celebration of friendship, self-acceptance and the messy realities of grief.

From its opening number, delivered with assured vocals and infectious energy, the production establishes an actor-musician language in which instruments feel less like accompaniment than extensions of the characters themselves. Paul Robinson’s direction, Alex Weatherhill’s musical and associate direction and Simon Slater’s sound design work in close harmony, allowing music, movement and character to flow seamlessly into one another.

Helen Coyston’s inviting design places a painted sweep of Yorkshire Dales behind the familiar village hall, while Jane Lalljee’s lighting deftly reshapes the space as the women move between home, hospital and community life. The apparent simplicity gives Robinson’s staging considerable fluidity.

Most impressive is the production’s handling of tonal shifts. Christmas melodies can raise a smile before giving way to the emotional weight of the hospital scenes, yet neither humour nor heartbreak feels forced. The ensemble captures one of grief’s cruellest truths: the world continues moving even when the bereaved person feels suspended within it.

There is generosity in the writing and performances too. Each character receives a moment of definition, whether through perfectly timed comedy, an empowering anthem about ageing or a song that approaches subjects such as alcoholism with humanity rather than judgement. The community performers bring a welcome jolt of mischievous energy, with their songs carrying something of the anarchic exuberance and playful musical style of Matilda the Musical.

Karen Holmes’ Chris and Christina Meehan’s Annie deserve particular mention. Individually compelling, the lived-in warmth of their friendship gives much of the story its emotional weight, making its fractures as convincing as its affection. Yet the production’s real strength lies in the ensemble, whose collective chemistry, warmth and sharply observed performances give Calendar Girls its beating heart.

The famous calendar photoshoot is staged with wit, confidence and dignity, with Stephanie Dattani’s choreography and intimacy direction allowing its vulnerability and body-positive defiance to land without ever feeling exploitative.

By the finale, tears and laughter have become almost interchangeable. The standing ovation feels entirely earned: an exuberant, compassionate production that understands there is nothing ordinary about ordinary women.

Calendar Girls the Musical is at the New Wolsey Theatre until the 26th September 2026 https://www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/events/calendar-girls/
