EDINBURGH FRINGE: Acid’s Reign at Forth, Pleasance Courtyard****
This is a show which makes the climate crisis hot!
Everyone should want to be part of fighting to save the planet if it was this much fun.
It’s loud, colourful, has great songs and even greater characters, but it is also provocative and deeply moving. If everyone embraced the problem like this perhaps the problem might even have been solved!
It all begins when drag artist Alex Acid gets hi-jacked by drag climate change protesters as she makes her way to a drag queen competition.
Wanting to be the centre of attention, she forms a radical drag supergroup ready to take on climate change and becomes a committed activist (though she should ditch her plastic headdresses – or recycle them in some way!)
Fast forward seven years, the world has moved on and when commercial success comes calling the group have to decide whether to stay radical or stay visible.
I can’t imagine any of the performers having difficulty staying visible! Victoria Scone’s stage presence is huge as Alex Acid while I was often deeply moved by Gigi Zahir as Ria Listic, jealous of Scarlett Harlett’s wardrobe as Dina Mite, endeared by Se Carr/Jamie Fuxx as Mickey and exhausted by Ash Weir’s manic performance as Olive Branch.
Who knew the climate crisis could be so much fun!
