EDINBURGH FRINGE: Disenchanted! The Hit Musical at Pentland Theatre in Pleasance at the EICC***(1 hr 20 mins)

Don’t take your children to see this off-Broadway show. For their illusions about fairytale princesses riding off into the sunset to live happily ever after with their handsome princes will be well and truly shattered.

Billed as a hit musical, I wouldn’t go that far, but the line-up of sassy princesses can really belt out songs about being…well, disenchanted, with how they are perceived by, for instance, Disney and the capitalism and greed of Hollywood. They sing about chauvinism and how being trapped inside fairytales is driving them insane.

But far from being serious, this is a fun-filled romp through the tales of Brothers Grimm. Snow White is a rock chick, the Little Mermaid (since when was she cast as a princess) is a drunk and Mulan is a lesbian.

Every performer has a big presence but the stand-out for me is Ashley New as a perfectly sweet Mulan, while musical director Joanna King adds to the girl power with her mighty one-man band.

Disenchanted! The Hit Musical  is at Pentland Theatre in Pleasance at the EICC until Aug 30
