EDINBURGH FRINGE: Amazons at Summerhall (Former Gents Locker Room)***

The blurb said this show was about the Amazon rainforest and the generations of women who have fought to protect it, so I was expecting to hear about indigenous activists standing up to the corporations stripping their land for profit.
But Gael Le Cornec’s solo show is way more personal, more about her ancestors’ lives than the actual forest. There is a reference to her grandmother being a medicine woman, making remedies from the leaves of different trees, but in her effort to bring her life to audiences at the Fringe her passion and excitement override a coherent story.
There is no getting away from the fact that Gael is an engaging, emotionally charged performer. She is also very funny. But it is strange that, for someone who feels so passionately about her homeland she is four weeks away from becoming a British citizen!
Amazons is on at 7.50pm until Aug 25 at Summerhall (Former Gents Locker Room) www.summerhall.co.uk (1 hr 10 mins)
