EDINBURGH FRINGE: A Year and a Day at thespace@Surgeons’ Hall (Theatre 2) (50 minutes)****

A Year and a Day is the story of Nathan, a man who, struck by a mysterious light, only lives for one day before being transported to the same date a year later. And so the pattern is repeated until, in reality, while he would have been 90, he recounts his story as a twentysomething.
It’s a fascinating concept and one which is executed by gifted storyteller Chris Sainton-Clark who brings to life the people and places in his life over the years without a single prop.
Already the winner of nine international awards, he wrote the story at the age of just 23 and yet the depth of his characters and their emotions have a maturity beyond his years.
I was riveted as I discovered how Nathan’s wife, friends and family deal (or not) with his sudden appearances and disappearances, and how their lives pan out without him. And as he morphs from one character to another I was in awe of his physicality as he threw himself, literally, into scenes of love longing, and violence.
I was not the only one moved to tears at the end.
A Year and a Day is on at 6.45pm each day (except Aug 10) until Aug 16 at thespace@Surgeons’ Hall (Theatre 2). www.thespaceuk.com
