EDINBURGH FRINGE: Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel at the Lyceum Studio

The devil's advocate?
Behind its beautiful, Victorian exterior, Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum is a powerhouse for new and groundbreaking work.
And in this experimental piece, writer and performer Tim Crouch even questions the future of theatre.
In years to come, he says, anthropologists will wonder at the time when people gathered together in one room to watch other people pretend to be other people!
His nod to a future, when everything may be virtual, was his wearing of a virtual reality headset (though he swears there was nothing in it), through which he not only relates a modern dress production of King Lear and the point in which he, playing The Fool, leaves the theatre because it all gets too much, but also gives lengthy observations of different members of the virtual audience.
At times uncomfortable but mostly entertaining (except the intervals when he takes off the headset and cracks very suspect jokes), it expands The Fool’s line, Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel, where he is mad because he is whipped for telling the truth while other people get away with lies..
Let's hope Crouch is proved wrong!
EDINBURGH FRINGE: Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel is at the Lyceum Studio, venue 593 until August 28.
