EDINBURGH FRINGE: Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers: Beat Grrrls at the Assembly Rooms (venue 20) (Bijou) EH2 2LR ****
Apparently, the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers have been going 25 years - which must be around the time I first saw them, in Slough. I’ve been a  fan ever since.

Their drumming, taken from an ancient Japanese art-form, is hypnotic. There may be no words spoken in this piece of theatre but it is the drum beats which speak to us.

Beat Grrrls is making its premiere at the Fringe. Consisting only of women, who in times gone by were not permitted to play the sacred Taiko drums, this show turns this stereotype on its head and features gentle, more feminine pieces as well as the usual heavy stuff.

Whatever they play, however, it requires a lot of skill, discipline and strength (I bet they don’t have bingo wings!). Their moves are at times balletic and they show great showmanship - or should I say, showwomanship?

Based in Scotland, the drummers are an international lot - from Croatia, Hungary, Scotland, and from Chinese and Japanese parentage, but then the language their drums speak is universal.

Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers: Beat Grrrls is at the Assembly Rooms until Aug 24 at 5.30pm. Tickets £13 with concessions.
